Canal Street Redevelopment & Safety Harbor Main Street

Canal Street’s stylized streetscape in downtown New Smyrna Beach celebrates the unique materials of this oceanfront community. Coquina shell, tabby concrete, custom ironwork, palms and live oaks are used throughout the three-block area. Fred Halback* was responsible as project manager and led the design and engineering elements. Fred also developed the master plan for Safety Harbor’s Main Street and served as a significant subconsultant on the overall team during design. The streetscape incorporated a series of pedestrian-oriented and traffic-calming devices to help make a more walkable and dynamic downtown street.
