First Congregation Sons of Israel Synagogue Restoration

Location: St. Augustine, Florida

Client: First Congregation Sons of Israel

Project Scope: Master Planning
Landscape Architecture

Project Size: 0.27 acres

Project Description & Challenge

Marquis Latimer + Halback is working closely with the historic First Congregation Sons of Israel on the master planning and visioning for this historic synagogue. Early Jewish settlers to St. Augustine had a vision to provide a place for Jewish worship, learning, and activities for the members then, and to provide an enduring legacy for future generations. Descendants of those original families are looking to continue that vision. Based on the master plan, ML+H is executing the detailed design for all aspects of the project.

Solution

Respecting the historic location, the site is updated with an expanded entry plaza to welcome families and the community. A unique prayer garden adjacent to the Talmud Torah (school) contains plants referenced in the book of Deuteronomy.
