Project Description & Challenge

An abstraction of a bald cypress dome and “spring” help to tell the story of the natural landscape in the heart of downtown Orlando. Interpretation of the original layout of the city and county, as well as three previous courthouses, leads to the robust reuse of building and site to create a major public gathering space. Frederick Halback led a talented team in connecting the space with historic and cultural reminders, redesign of Wall Street Plaza pedestrian mall connection, and a Lymmo transit stop.

After 20 years of growth, the mature cypress dome has created an urban oasis that showcases the site’s interpretive public art while providing a major public space for civic engagement in the downtown core.
