Project Description & Challenge

Founded over 90 years ago, the St. Augustine Art Association is a hub for the City’s thriving arts community. In addition to being an art gallery, their building is a popular gathering space and event venue. The Association, having outgrown their interior space, wanted to expand their facilities by bringing their mission outdoors. Marquis Latimer + Halback, Inc. was hired to develop an Art Garden that would be an integral part of the event space and be an art piece in its own right.

With very limited space, the design team embraced the functional needs of the site to artfully incorporate accessible walkways, courtyards, and rain gardens as the defining features of the garden. Two large sculptures, nestled into the rain gardens, flank the building and bring public art to a historic streetscape. These sculptures are part of the TOUCH St. Augustine collection and feature braille pedestals that describe the piece to the visually impaired.
