As the responsible steward for the management of the properties, the University required careful research and evaluation of the existing assets as well as a sustainable financial model for operations. The complex serves as a setting for State ceremonies, historic elements and landscapes. Included around the complex are roadway, parking and landscape improvements that unify the Capitol streetscape with the downtown area. The Lincolnville Landscape Master Plan seeks to reinforce the neighborhood’s historic charm and character to help improve long-term livability for residents. Marquis Latimer + Halback, Inc. designed pedestrian streetscapes and plazas using placemaking techniques that included local art and uniquely detailed fixtures. An adjacent festival park also needed re-purposing as an anchor for downtown events. With the community’s support, St. Augustine was able to successfully complete this multimodal, 1,100-car parking facility. The guidelines were utilized in the design and implementation of numerous blocks of pedestrian streetscape improvements in the downtown core. Serving as a horizontal elevator, Lymmo is a bus transit system in a dedicated lane. Streetscape treatments and stations throughout the route provide a continuous landscape, public art, and lighting program. These projects included the complete upgrade of underground utilities, the reduction or reorientation of traffic lanes, widened pedestrian sidewalks and site amenities, and shaded tree canopies. The new lobby featured floor to ceiling windows with a view of a parking lot, lift station, and electrical junction box. The new design had a narrow footprint that had to screen the adjacent utilities while providing a pleasant view from the new lobby. The new courtyard features a decorative patio and benches with a series of raised planters that create and intimate garden space. To make the most of the limited space, a row of annual flowers lines the borders of the courtyard so there is interest in all seasons. Special care was taken to preserve the existing live oaks that flank the space. Marquis Latimer + Halback, Inc. was invited to lead a team in the master planning and design of this new outdoor performing venue through a design competition. Requirements included the development of an outdoor performing arts venue and park that also serves the needs of the University of Alabama community. The team created a vision for a new amphitheater and festival park that reconnects the historic downtown with the new riverwalk. Using the backdrop of the river and one of the nation’s longest wooden trestle railroad bridges, the amphitheater provides fixed and grass seating for 8,000. With great bones, the park is surrounded on three sides by lakes. The challenge was to create a city showcase for the arts, a place for gatherings and festivals, and a place to welcome new cultural partners. Frederick Halback developed a master plan and subsequent detailed design for all park and landscape architectural elements. The major road that bisects the park was relocated; internal roads were depressed into the ridge, separating vehicles and pedestrians. These techniques provided unobstructed views across a wide 8-acre great lawn to the lakes below. A variety of spaces were created for either large groups or solitary contemplation. A new grand entrance, involving a fountain and sculpture plaza, welcomes a series of existing and new cultural organizations. The project includes a 1,200 foot pedestrian promenade that can support fishing tournaments, art fairs, farmer’s markets, and community events. Utilizing the site’s close relationship to the water, ML+H has created a master plan and detailed design that includes public spaces and parks. The challenge was to create a food truck park that welcomed other vendors, became a neighborhood venue to meet friends, and a place to chill out. Located on A1A on the way to the beach, the venue spot is perfect as a food festival location. The new food truck park includes space for six vendors, and commissary kitchen. Marquis Latimer + Halback, Inc., created a lush tropical setting that includes shaded seating, events stage, natural stormwater filtration, urban garden, solar power and other sustainable site features. The phased plan outlines sustainable expansion of the remaining property while also developing standards for the appropriate preservation of the existing historic elements.
