Elected as a fellow by the American Society of Landscape Architects for Built Projects, Fred’s work has received dozens of design awards, including two environmental design awards presented by the First Lady in White House ceremonies. Marquis Latimer + Halback, Inc. was named to the University of Florida’s 2019 Gator100 during a ceremony on Feb. 22 at UF’s J. Wayne Reitz Union Grand Ballroom. Sponsored by the UF Alumni Association, in partnership with the UF Entrepreneurship & Innovation Center, the Gator100 recognizes the 100 fastest-growing businesses owned or led by UF alumni in the world.  Ernst & Young calculated each company’s compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the past three years to generate the ranking.

ML+H was ranked #96 with a CAGR of 25.51%.

Based in the nation’s oldest city of St. Augustine, Florida, ML+H has earned a distinct reputation for creating unique design solutions focused on historic and cultural landscapes. With a staff of 10, the office seeks to balance today’s need with the rich history and culture of the past. Since 1978, the firm’s projects and approach have been recognized with awards from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation (FTHP), American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the Urban Land Institute (ULI), and many others.

The firm is led by President/CEO, Jeremy Marquis, RLA, a 2008 graduate in landscape architecture who received the 2015 Young Alumnus of the Year award from UF’s College of Design, Construction, and Planning.  Vice President/COO Fremont Latimer, RLA (MLA, 2010), CFO/Treasurer Laura Marquis, CPA (MAcc, 2009), and Founding Principal Frederick Halback, RLA, FASLA (BLA, 1976) make ML+H a true part of Gator Nation.

“The Gator100 honors UF alumni from across the university who are founding and growing amazing companies around the country,” said Kent Fuchs, president of the University of Florida. “It’s an incredible affirmation of the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of the Gator Nation.”

To qualify for the Gator100, companies must have been in business for five years or more as of September 28, 2018, and have had verifiable annual revenues of $250,000 or more every year since 2015. Additionally, a UF alumnus or alumna must have met one of the following three leadership criteria:

  1. Owned 50 percent or more of the company from Jan. 1, 2015, through Sept. 28, 2018; or

  2. Served as company’s chief executive from Jan. 1, 2015, through Sept. 28, 2018; or  

  3. Founded the company and been active as a member of the most senior management team from Jan. 1, 2015, through Sept. 28, 2018.
