Project Description + Challenge

Creating a New Vision for Historic Streets

For over a decade, there has been an ongoing effort in the City of St. Augustine to improve the entries and streets in downtown. From orienting the visitor at major intersections, to improving vehicular and pedestrian mobility, the challenge is to develop implementable guidelines for the historic streets and infrastructure. ML+H has developed a series of streetscape “visioning” images and a companion set of guidelines.

Our Solution

The visioning effort focused on appropriate ‘gateways that signal entry to downtown, efficient traffic movement, on-street parking, designated travel lanes (trams and carriages), improved walkability, and aesthetics.  The guidelines utilize ‘complete street’ techniques, new brick streets, flush curbs, coquina concrete sidewalks, street lights, street trees and other historic elements into ‘pedestrian friendly' connectors that enhance and organize mobility in the historic downtown core.
